What is terry?

Terry is typically used for bathroom textiles such as towels, washcloths, bathrobes, and similar products. This is due to its unique structure and associated properties.

Terry is recognisable by its dense looped pile. These loops are visible on both sides of the fabric and give the product its distinctive structure. What makes terry cloth special is that, in addition to the normal ground warp, it has an additional pile warp, which forms the loops and creates a three-dimensional weave.

Properties of terry

The special loop structure of terry offers a number of advantages that are particularly evident in towels and bath towels:

Good absorbency

One of the advantages of terry is its good absorbency. The loops provide a larger surface area, allowing it to absorb water effectively. The more and denser the loops, the higher the water absorption capacity and thus the weight. A high-quality terry cloth towel can absorb a large amount of water, making it ideal for use after showering, bathing, or swimming. On the other hand, the weight of terry items is relatively high due to the high material content, especially after drying..

Diverse haptics

Depending on the choice of material, the warp and weft density and the pile height of the loops, terry cloth can have a soft and fluffy structure that provides a thick, voluminous feeling, but also a rough, sometimes even scratchy surface that can achieve a massage or even peeling effect.

For the sake of completeness, terry velour should be mentioned here. This is a type of terry fabric where the loops on one side of the fabric are cut. The loop structure can then only be found on one side, usually on the back, of the fabric and open fibers are formed on the "cut side". This process gives the fabric a uniform surface, which is often printed on. The open fibers also increase the fabric's water absorption capacity. However, the durability of terry velour is noticeably lower compared to terry.

Robustness and longevity

Terry is robust and durable, thanks to its looped structure, which provides additional reinforcement. This makes it a durable material that can withstand many wash cycles. The robust structure protects the fibers from mechanical damage. Only the fluffiness can suffer over time.

Thread pulls, which can occur in terry due to the loops, can lead to unsightly gaps in low-quality fabrics, or in high-quality fabrics they can simply be cut off without any visible consequences.

Terry cloth absorbs dirt excellently and firmly locks it into its loops. Only during washing are the dirt particles released from the fabric.

Terry from FEILER

FEILER uses 100% pure, OEKO-Tex certified cotton for its terry. Cotton naturally absorbs moisture well, is pleasant on the skin, and rarely causes skin irritation, making it a good choice.

Our terry towels are woven from long-staple cotton fibers. These are more durable than short-staple fibers and ensure the high quality of our products.

Pulled threads, which can occur in terry due to the loops, are not a problem with FEILER products. During weaving, the threads are interwoven in such a way that if a pull occurs, no unsightly gaps are created. The thread can simply be cut off, and there will be no trace of it afterward.
